What’s in the workshop

More like what isn’t! Your students will be able to take blood from a fake arm, record their own ECG, try key hole surgery, see inside their body with an ultrasound machine, take a picture of the inside of their eye and much more.

Every students gets a their own medical observation sheet to fill in during the workshop as well as a print out of their ECG.

They can also check out our Careers Wall that outlines dozens of different career paths as well as salaries and training routes!

What careers does the workshop cover?

We know the most common answer to ‘what careers do you know about in the NHS?’ comes with the answer: doctor, nurse, physio, dentist, midwife… or as well call it the Holy Quintet!

So, in the workshop students can find out about these BUT we focus on the lesser known careers such as biomedical science, healthcare science, medical engineering, medical physics, physiology, bioinformatics and many more.

That isn’t the best part. We show students that many of the careers are accessible with levels 9-4 at GCSE too!

Who is it for and how does it work?

The workshop can be tailored for any year group from years 4,5 & 6 in primary, all the way through to year 13 in secondary. We can visit for the day and repeat the workshops 4-6 times over the day. Each workshop is 50-70 minutes long and all we need is a good sized classroom with access to tables and a few plug sockets. The workshop has a 15-20 minute intro from the MM team before the students get the rest of the session to experience using the kit! It is all hands on!

Every student receives a 4 page workbook where they can record results and check off activities. Each activity has 2-4 different careers linked to them. The careers are colour coded too, so they can see which grades they need at GCSE! Students can also pick up a mini poster that gives an overview of 13 different sectors in the NHS!

What our teachers say…

Both students and staff really enjoyed the day. Quang brought along lots of medical equipment for them to try and it has certainly inspired a few to think about a medical career. Really engaging and good value.

Tina Belcher

Amazing interactive experience for the students, it got them really engaged and helped some decide on a possible future career. The staff were amazing and so enthusiastic! Will definitely be booking again.

Michelle Hackett

Brilliant hands on session. Our students were so enganged by the equipment and medical Mavericks staff that we couldn’t get them to leave (even though the event was held after school on a Friday!)
